Meet Douglas Bolender, Ph.D.

Douglas Bolender, Ph.D., Research Assistant Professor at the Andrew Fiske Memorial Center for Archaeological Research and the Department of Anthropology, University of Massachusetts, Boston (UMass Boston)
Dr. Bolender has conducted fieldwork in Iceland, Greenland, Denmark, Hungary, and Eastern North America. He is co-director of the Skagafjörður Church and Settlement Survey in Iceland.

On May 31, 2022, Dr. Bolender appeared on Science for the Public's interview program, Contemporary Science: Issues & Innovations to discuss Reconstructing the Ancient Viking Colonies. He explained how archaeologists locate and verify ancient Norsemen/Viking settlements. Dr. Bolender also described the Vikings' history of world trade and exploration, and their far-flung explorations and raids enabled by their unique ships. Dr. Bolender appeared in the BBC/PBS Nova documentary, Vikings Unearthed.
