Meet Benjamin Weiss, PhD

In May, 2012 Dr. Weiss discussed The Core of the Moon and what the existence of an ancient magnetic lunar core suggests about the evolution of the solar system.

Benjamin Weiss, PhD is an Associate Professor of Planetary Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He studies the development of metallic cores in planetary and lunar bodies and the significance of the magnetic fields in such entities. The research at Professor Weiss's Paleomagnetism Lab at MIT uses SQUID microscopy to help resolve questions about the origin of the Moon and the formation of the solar system. The Weiss Paleomagnetism Lab conducts magnetic studies on rocks from Mars, the Moon, and Earth to understand the evolution of planets, magnetism, and life.
