Meet Mehmet Toner, Ph.D.

Mehmet Toner, PhD, Helen Andrus Benedict Professor, Biomedical Engineering, Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School; and Professor of Health Sciences and Technology (HST) at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health & Sciences Technology.

Dr. Toner has led major developments in cryopreservation, the field that creates preservation methods of organs and tissues for transplants, egg implants and tissue surgery. He appeared on Science for the Public's program, Contemporary Science Issues & Innovations (a GBH Forum Network webinar) January 09, 2024 to explain how "freezing" and "drying" of organs for transplants differs from the way we preserve food. He also described the many challenges of this field, which combines engineering and biology. Frozen in Time: Preserving for Later Revival
